Courage and Croissants, Inspiring Joyful Living by Suzanne Saxe-Roux and Jean P. Roux

Courage and Croissants, Inspiring Joyful Living, A Story and Life Guidebook set in San Francisco and the south of France, is a story and life guidebook featuring a dual-career professional couple with a young daughter who took the risk to go in search of what was truly important to them. At its heart is a love of family and the desire for quality of life. This book will inspire you to manifest your dreams and provide immediate actions you can take to create a life of good health, balance and joy.

Candid and inspiring, Suzanne and Jean- Pierre willingly acknowledge that the American Dream, as they were brought up to believe, has changed and the cost to one’s family, one’s health, and one’s own well-being can only be sustained for a period of time, not for 40 years or more. Along with millions of stressed out, busy professionals, Suzanne and Jean tell a great story and provide a life guidebook that is full of courageous and simple changes that can help us all create the lifestyles we want to live wherever we are.

Suzanne and Jean are late baby boomers, highly educated professionals who had a daughter late in life after 17 years of marriage. They have a life many would envy, but it hasn’t helped them live the life they so desire – a perfectly balanced life. What they have learned by living in a small village in the south of France is that there are many simple ways to bring joie de vivre into your daily family life and at the same time some changes require a great deal of courage and patience, but all are possible.

What Kids Need to Succeed by Andrea Patten and Harry S. Patten

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Stop! You're not raising a child...You're raising afuture adult! Can you see what's wrong with this picture? There's a child where an adult should be. And that's the point. We speak in terms of 'raising children,' but the thought we need to keep 'front and center' is that we're raising future adults.

We interviewed numerous successful adults in search of common themes. We studied their life stories and compared them to biographies of other well-known high-achievers. A pattern emerged. Successful adults share a common background, something we call the Four Foundations of Adult Achievement.

In the parenting book, What Kids Need to Succeed, these principles are illustrated through inspiring stories that help parents think about ways to prepare their own children for a bright future. When you lay the groundwork for these foundations, your children start to develop attitudes and habits shared by successful adults.

What are the Four Foundations? We thought you'd never ask:
1. Refuse to Fail
2. Work Hard
3. Develop Discipline
4. Give Back

Other parenting books seem to have pushed aside values, ethics, and child discipline in favor of focusing on giving your children self-esteem. But you can't give your kids self-esteem - it comes from within. THEY have to develop it. It's our job to help them do that. The Four Foundations set the stage for growing confident, competent adults.

There's a lot of parenting help and advice available. And it's loaded with contradictions. Some of that parenting advice can backfire and you won't know it until it's too late.

We'll show you how to avoid the "deadly sins" of parenting:
1. Treating your child as an equal
2. Overindulging - especially the "wants"
3. Forgetting to teach them about consequences, or
4. Simply not taking action when you should

The good news is: it's NOT too late to start teaching the Four Foundations. The sooner the better. And, it doesn't matter if you have 1 kid or 12, whether they call you "Mom," "Dad," "Nana," or "Papa" - nor does it matter if you're a foster parent or grandparent. If you're entrusted with raising a future adult (what you used to think of as raising a child or raising children) you can start today. We'll show you how to instill the simple - not 'easy' - ideas which will set your children apart as they grow up.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
What Kids Need to Succeed: Four Foundations of Adult Achievement was authored by father-daughter team Harry S. Patten and Andrea Patten.

Harry developed the sales skills that are the foundation for his business by selling Kirby vacuum cleaners door-to-door. Since 1962, this self-made millionaire has become the foremost buyer and seller of rural and recreational land in America. He is a father and a grandfather.

Throughout her life, Andrea Patten has distinguished herself as a creative problem-solver. In addition to being a Mom, she has spent most of her adult life working in human services, both in the public and private sectors. Her particular area of expertise requires an entrepreneurial mind as she has played a key role in helping organizations bring such innovations as bilingual programming, family treatment and networking for comprehensive client care. Andrea is a licensed addictions counselor who has worked in substance abuse treatment, child protection and domestic violence settings.

"My work as a family advocate exposed me to a wide variety of families and problems. I'm fascinated by the ways they choose to solve them. My favorite part of direct service work was always helping people to identify and connect with the well of optimism and strength inside of them. That's one of the reasons I like the Four Foundations so much. The four foundations not only remind people of what they are capable of, they serve as a way to filter and prioritize information and ideas: I think there's something for every family here."

"Teaming with my father to write What Kids Need to Succeed was a tremendous growth opportunity for me. It took me out of a familiar role and allowed me to reach families in an entirely new manner. I think that this book can provide hope to any family, regardless of their circumstances."

When her son was young she took a break from human services and went to work in the marketing department of her family’s business. There she discovered more similarities."I've always had a gift for seeing the common ground between issues, organizations or departments that appear, on the surface, to be very different from one another. It's easy for me to find areas of overlap that allow them to work together. Whether an organization offers a product or a service, its message needs to be presented in a way which best serves its intended audience. That's one of the reasons I like the Four Foundations so much."

Andrea and her co-author father have always been interested in helping projects (and people) develop to their fullest potential. Andrea works with organizations to tailor programs, workshops, and keynote addresses to meet their unique needs. In addition, the pair have provided numerous copies of What Kids Need to Succeed to well-run organizations serving kids and families.
